Recommended Thermostat Settings for Home Comfort

Your home’s thermostat is a fairly inconspicuous part of your HVAC system. It is not very big and is usually placed on the wall in an unremarkable location. But make no mistake about it, the thermostat’s importance is in no way relative to its size.

In fact, your thermostat is, in essence, the control center of your system. You program it and it, in turn, tells your system when to come on and how cool or warm the air circulating through your home should be. If it is not operating properly, it could result in not only unsatisfactory heating/cooling, but inefficient operation and higher utility bills.

Mast Heating & Cooling, the go-to HVAC specialists in the Zeeland and Grand Rapids, MI areas since 1956, know the importance of your HVAC system’s thermostat. That’s why we offer a complete line of Trane & Honeywell thermostats, from basic solutions (large display, easy to use) to high-tech Wi-Fi smart options. If your home’s thermostat is acting up, or you are simply interested in upgrading to a convenient smart thermostat which you can program from a remote, call us today and we will be glad to help out.

In the meantime, we are often asked what a thermostat should be set at. There are many factors that determine this, including season, size of home and size and preferences of your family. Here are some basic guidelines:

SAVE MONEY DURING THE SUMMER

Industry experts at Trane & Honeywell estimate that by setting your thermostat 7 to 10 degrees above your optimal temperature setting while you’re away will help reduce expenses over the summer.

ENERGY SAVINGS DURING THE WINTER

When the weather turns colder, try setting your thermostat on 68 degrees, especially during the day if no one is home. Now, this may be too uncomfortable for some family members, so you need to adjust it accordingly. But know this: energy.gov estimates that turning your thermostat down 10-15 degrees during the winter can result in as much as 15 percent in energy savings!

Mast Heating & Cooling will check out your furnace as part of a regular AC tune-up and we will also fill you in on just how much time and money you can save with a Trane programmable thermostat. Call us today to find out more or check us out on Facebook and Twitter!
